Corpus Christi Hammerheads(IFL)

The Corpus Christi Hammerheads joined the IFL as a former member of the Intense Football League. Toric Goins led the team in scoring with 16 touchdowns, while quarterback Cory Miles passed for 33 scores and nine interceptions. Redford Borel led the team in rushing with 389 yards and 15 scores. The team got off to a 2-6 start and finished at 6-8. Six of the losses came by a combined 40 points. The team was well in line for a playoff berth, but their game on June 20th against Abilene would ultimately cost them their postseason. During the game, a Corpus Christi lineman, Eli Abraham, was ejected from the game. He later came back on to the field and knocked down the head linesman. He was arrested and charged with assault. Two weeks later, on July 2nd, the IFL office ruled that there was a lack of control by Hammerheads team officials, and the 44-35 victory was taken away. Had the win remained and San Angelo lost to El Paso in its final regular season game, the Hammerheads would have entered the playoffs in a road rematch against Abilene. The team returned in 2010 and again finished at 6-8. Wesley Cooper quarterbacked the squad, throwing for 24 scores and 18 picks. Brandon Hussey led all receivers with seven touchdowns. Justin Hardman led the ground game with 19 scores. This year, 6-8 was good enough for the playoffs and there were no league penalties. The team earned a road berth at Arkansas and was defeated 44-29. The Hammerheads trailed 23-21 with the ball, but were stopped on three possessions in goal to go situations.
