The Macon Knights are one of the more remarkable teams in the AF2. Despite consistently low attendance, strong ownership has kept this team alive. And of course, they have a history of winning, which is more important. In their inaugural season in 2001, the team finished 10-6 and would lose their first ever playoff game to eventual Champions, Quad City. In 2002, the team got one step closer, this time winning against Augusta before losing the quarter finals to the Florida Firecats. 2003 would be, by far, the Knights’ best season as they would reach the Championship game by winning at home against the Firecats and on the road against the Albany Conquest and Tennessee Valley Vipers. The season would not end with a win, however, and the Knights lost to the Tulsa Talons. The Knights have recently fallen on hard times, with back-to-back losing seasons. However, they did qualify for the playoffs in 2005, where they would lose a heartbreaker to the Louisville Fire. The Fire scored 35 fourth quarter points to leave Macon on the short end of a 55-54 score. The team made a similar run the following year. The Knights won six of their final eight to finish at 8-8. However, the team went 2-6 against playoff bound opponents and missed the playoffs. Following the season, the Macon Knights franchise ceased operations.
