The Carolina Speed were not a very strong team at all. The team gained many of their wins by beating up on weaker teams. The Speed did beat Mississippi at home, however. The Speed played tough with Lakeland into the third quarter, but eventually lost by 23. In 2008, the Speed were no better, going 6-8 and losing a tiebreaker to Huntington to meet Florence in the playoffs. The team lost three of its final four games. The 2009 team was constantly in flux. Four players spent significant time at quarterback, with Tribble Reese getting the most. Unfortunately, Reese passed for 12 touchdowns to 11 picks. Josh Smith led the team in receiving with 16 touchdowns. The team began the year 2-5, which included an overtime loss to Florence and a one point loss to Columbus. The team turned it around to finish at 7-7, but did lose a game at D.C. The Speed missed the playoffs, finishing one game behind Fayetteville.
