The Columbus Destroyers have been the worst team in recent history in the AFL. They have survived for five years, being lovable losers with a very strong fan-base. In their first year, the Destroyers won six games and also managed to play a couple of very close games. There was hope for 2005. However, the team did not follow through, winning just two games, while setting a franchise high elven game losing streak. In 2006, the Destroyers finally got to the .500 plateau, going 8-8 on the year and 4-4 at home and on the road. However, the team missed the playoffs due to a tiebreaker with the Georgia Force. The team lost by an average of sixteen points. However, the team dominated playoff teams like Philadelphia and Colorado, even winning at Austin. The Destroyers of 2007 were a very up and down team, losing five games in a row before their season finale. However, after winning at New York, the Destroyers qualified for the playoffs at 7-9. Mat Nagy and his team went on the road at Tampa Bay, Dallas, and Georgia, defeating the top three seeds in the conference and advancing to the Arena Bowl. In the neutral site game against San Jose, the Destroyers' magical ride came to a 55-33 ending. The team was terrible again in 2008, winning just three games. Mat Nagy and Derek Lee were the stars of the team. Nagy passed for 74 touchdowns to just eight interceptions, but the Destroyers only managed wins over New York, Tampa Bay, and Utah. Seven of their thirteen losses came by ten points or less.
