Fur flew high in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center as the LA Bayou Beast took a bite out of the Utah Catzz.
A game filled with hard physical football left the Catzz scoreless in the second half. Several of Utah's offensive drives ended in turnovers, including two interceptions by Travis Brown, defensive player of the week, for 27 yards and one by James Gillyard. Jack Phillips opened the turnovers with a 45 yard interception return for a touchdown early in the second quarter.
James Gillyard and Pat Rogers accounted for 9 and 8 tackles, respectively, of the team's 34. Charles Johnson and Franklin Thomas were accredited with one sack each for a total of 16 yards.
Quarterback Melvin Hill passed for 98 yards and ran for one touchdown. He continues to lead the league with a 58.2 completion percentage. Backup Doug Coleman warmly greeted the fans with a 39 yard touchdown pass to Michael Lewis after a long stay on the injured list.
Michael Lewis, who leads the league in yards per reception, took in three receptions for 72 yards and one touchdown. Also contributing on the receiving end were Joe Valencia, who caught three passes for 53 yards, and Derrick Fobb and Byron Allen, who finished with one reception each.
Germaine Williams rushed for 28 yards and pounded in 2 touchdowns before leaving the field. Byron Allen ran in a 2 yard touchdown in the third quarter to complete the night with 36 yards on 6 carries, averaging 6 yards per carry. Melvin Hill and Doug Coleman did the quarterback scramble 5 times and Pat Rogers relieved a fired up Germaine Williams with 2 runs for 10 yards.
Special teams came under close surveillance after they allowed 147 yards in kick-off returns, but Matt Huerkamp impressed the crowd of 4,679 with a beautiful 52-yard field goal which ended the first half.
