The Madison Mad Dogs used a balanced offensive attack to capture a 36-20 win over the Minnesota Monsters in front of 4,824 fans in the Dane County Coliseum Saturday.
Head coach Dick Adams used the exhibition game to test new quarterback Raymond Philyaw. Philyaw rotated quarters with Mike Simpson, finishing up the fourth quarter when he took a knee as time ran out in the game. The quarterbacking duo combined for 10-20 passing for 96 yards. Each quarterback was 5-10, with Simpson finishing with one interception and Philyaw finishing with one touchdown pass and two successful conversion attempts.
The receiving corps all saw action as the quarterbacks spread passes out to five different receivers. Kahn Powell finished with eight catches for 25 yards, Mandrell Dean had four catches for 24 yardds and Nick Johnson had three catches for 19 yards.
The running game accounted for the remaining 116 yards. The Mad Dogs average 4.7 yards per rush. Philyaw led all rushers with eight rushes for 88 yards and one TD.
The Madison defense again held strong when they needed to. The Monsters were 0-6 in fourth down conversion attempts and the Mad Dogs got to quarterback Chris Esterly five times.
Esterly was 12-30 for 85 yards and one TD. Wide receiver Jo Jo Justice caught six passes for 53 yards and one touchdown.
Madison has a bye for the week of the June 13th games and will host Honolulu on June 20th. Madison's record is now 4-4.
